Springdale High assistant football coach Eli Drinkwitz resigned his position Thursday afternoon, he told the Springdale Morning News.

Drinkwitz, who was Springdale’s offensive line coach and offensive coordinator the last three seasons, accepted a job Wednesday morning with Auburn University. Drinkwitz will be assisting Auburn’s football coaches on the offensive quality control staff, he said.

“This is an opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Drinkwitz, who starts his new job on June 9. “To have the opportunity to work with coaches Gene Chizik and Gus Malzahn, people I know and are comfortable with, it’s just something I couldn’t turn down.”

The timing of Drinkwitz’s resignation comes at a tough time for first-year Springdale coach Shane Patrick, who recently completed his coaching staff with the hiring of three other coaches. But now, Patrick will have to go back to the drawing board and find another coach who can fulfill the necessary duties on offense.
