Making Due With What You Have

I went up to Decatur last week for a story as part of our annual Dog Days summer prep football tour. If you remember, Decatur was unable to field a varsity team last fall because of low numbers of players. The Bulldogs are back trying again and I hope they can make it this time around. There were only 11 kids practicing that day at the start, but 2-3 more came in once practice started. Interestingly, coach Stanley Ellis and his players are able to practice using a unique plan. They set up a defense made up of a couple of extra players and upside-down trash cans. They run only plays to the right side, then move the trash cans and extra players over to the left side to work on plays to that side of the field. Pretty ingenious, I thought.
