Springdale High Dominates Scrimmage

Springdale High clicked on all cylinders Tuesday night in a controlled scrimmage at Siloam Springs. The sophomore and junior varsity players played about 40 plays before the varsity players for both teams played two 12-minutes quarters.

Springdale, which won the scrimmage 28-3, got several big plays, but none bigger than from junior running back Rahmon Taylor. Taylor totaled 151 yards and two touchdowns on only 18 carries. And if you want to know, that’s an average of about 19 yards per carry.

Senior quarterback Joseph Calcagni completed seven passes for 157 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown pass to Lentonio Jenner in the second and final quarter.

Although Springdale will continue to run the Spread offense this season, look for it to have one of the best running games in the 7A-West Conference. With five seniors on its offensive line, and two speedy running backs in Taylor and Jenner, its very possible that the Red’Dogs will try to control the tempo in each game they play and not allow teams to score a lot of points.

Granted, Springdale was playing against Class 5A Siloam on Tuesday, and it’ll play much tougher competition this season, but the Red’Dogs looked very impressive on offense and extremely disciplined on defense.

Who knows if this type of play will continue when the season starts against Little Rock Catholic on Sept. 3, but I’m thinking that Springdale is headed in the right direction.
