Shiloh As A Representative

An interesting debate broke out tonight in the newsroom.
And since few topics get high school football conversations started around Northwest Arkansas like Class 4A Shiloh Christian, what better way to start blogging than by bringing up the Saints?

Shiloh, ranked nationally and No. 1 in Class 4A, opened its season Monday night with a convincing win over Class 5A Watson Chapel. That, however, wasn’t all that unexpected, nor was it the primary topic of conversation following the game.

The Saints travel to Texas next week for face USA Today’s No. 1 Euless Trinity in the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic. The game has been talked about in the state since it was announced for a myriad of reasons.

Shiloh is a lightening rod in Arkansas high school football, no doubt. What’s been interesting about this upcoming game has been watching those who normally despise Shiloh — for the usual array of allegations of recruiting, poor sportsmanship or just plain jealousy — try to decide what they want to happen.

Most of those people obviously want to see the Saints struggle, looking for some kind of “see how it feels for a change” statement. However, the rational people I’ve talked with over the past few months have a different take. They want Shiloh, whether they like the school or not, to carry the banner for all of Arkansas into the nationally televised game. They actually want Shiloh to play well — and possibly win.

Whatever happens, plenty of football fans in Arkansas will be watching.
