Springdale Boys Reeling After Second Straight Loss

Coming into this week, Springdale High boys basketball coach Brad Stamps knew there would be plenty of challenges with having four games in six days. The Red’Dogs learned that the hard way on Monday night after losing 49-48 at Fort Smith Northside.

The Red’Dogs had plenty of chances late in the game, mostly with free throws, to secure the win. But Springdale simply couldn’t make the necessary plays down the stretch, and the result was its second straight league loss.

Senior forward Curtis Evans, one of Springdale’s best players and leading scorers, didn’t start the game or play in the first quarter. Stamps said after the game that Evans didn’t start because “of some disciplinary things.” Stamps wouldn’t go into details about the incident, but said it wasn’t any issue anymore.

The most impressive part, at least to me, is how Northside has emerged as a serious contender for the 7A-West Conference title. At 6-3, the Grizzlies are now tied for second place with Springdale. And with the games Northside has left, especially against league-leading Southside, the Grizzlies are in a good position.

Regardless, it’s a crazy week for the conference. Teams are trying to get as many games in as possible because of the recent winter weather. Prior to Monday, Springdale’s teams had only played 3 games in 20 days.

Here’s another tidbit about Northside’s girls team, which has been dominant since the late 90s under coach Rickey Smith. The Lady Bears have no had 13 straight seasons with 20 wins or more and have now earned a state tournament berth 17 straight years. It’s kind of ridiculous if you really think about it.

Today (Tuesday), Springdale’s teams will host Rogers Heritage before playing at Fort Smith Southside on Friday and then hosting Rogers High on Saturday. It’s going to be a tough week for both teams, but then again, when has the 7A-West Conference ever been easy?
