Bentonville’s Heard Shoots For Record Books

Bentonville boys basketball coach Jason McMahan took some time before Tuesday’s game against Fort Smith Southside to look into the Arkansas High School Sports Record Book provided by the Arkansas Activities Assocation.

He didn’t realize at the time that one of his players was about to earn himself a spot in that book.

Austin Heard needed only the first quarter to tie two state records in Bentonville’s 77-60 victory over Southside. The 6-foot guard was a perfect 5-for-5 on 3-pointers in the first quarter, matching a mark set in 2004 by Conway St. Joseph’s Blake Rollins and matched by Bergman’s Chris Mounce in 2009.

He didn’t take another 3-point shot in the game, and his 100 percent accuracy also ties a state record. The state record calls for a four-shot minimum, and McCrory’s Joey Massinelli was 4-for-4 during a game in 2004, while Conway’s Kenyon McNeill repeated the feat in 2008.

“I actually looked that up (Tuesday), as crazy as it sounds,” McMahan said.
